Are my Nike shoes vegan? ›

Nike is not a vegan brand. It does sell some products without animal materials, but they tend to use leather, which is essentially animal skin.

Nike eliminated animal-based glues from their manufacturing a number of years ago in favour of a 100 per cent synthetic alternative. Fortunately, Nike aren't the only sneaker manufacturers to get rid of animal-based glues in production. The use of synthetic glue has now become the norm — not the exception!

The vegan icon and singer announced the new range will feature two styles of Air Jordon's – one lime green, the other beige. Taking to Instagram, the star revealed the Nike trainers are “100% vegan with over 20% recycled material.”

Nike still uses real animal leather in the production of it's leather shoes, so if you see the universal 'genuine leather' sign on a pair of Nike trainers, then they are clearly not vegan.

The easiest way to know if a product is vegan is to look for a label that says 'Suitable For Vegans' or a 'Certified Vegan' logo. Another simple way is to scan the 'Allergen Information'. If the product contains dairy, eggs, or seafood, it would be stated under its allergen ingredients list.

The textile symbol means that the item is made from a fabric such as cotton or any other vegan material. If you see this symbol and not the ones that represent leather or coated leather, those shoes are good to buy!

Obviously, Nike sells some shoes with use leather uppers which are not vegan friendly, but others are harder to identify. Lucky for us, the Nike support representative we talked to was able to give us a list of 179 Nike shoes that are vegan! Therefore, some, but not all, of Nike's shoes are vegan!

Nike does not use fur, angora, or other exotic animal hair or skin in its products, which is a step in the right direction. However, it does use leather, wool, and down feather without specifying sources.
